The RAI is pleased to announce the launch of the Alain Locke Seminar, a regular virtual event series that showcases cutting-edge research in African American history, politics, biography, and culture. Through book talks with authors and panel discussions with Oxford faculty and students as well as distinguished visitors, the events program highlights the Vere Harmsworth Library’s Alain Locke Collection holdings and the vibrant research on African American history and culture taking place at the RAI.
The Locke Seminar is named after the first African American Rhodes Scholar, and made possible through the generous support of the Association of American of Rhodes Scholars (AARS).
The first Alain Locke Seminar will take place on Zoom on 5 December 2024 at 10.30am ET/ 3.30pm GMT with Professor Richard Blackett (Vanderbilt University) and chaired by Professor Emily West (University of Oxford) to discuss Richard's book: Samuel Ringold Ward: A Life of Struggle.
