The RAI congratulates Desmond King, Andrew Mellon Professor of American Government, on being elected to the National Academy of Sciences in the US – one of the highest honours a social scientist can achieve.
Desmond was one of 30 international members recognised by the Academy for their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.
Desmond is the author of 13 books, 9 coedited books and numerous articles and chapters. His research interests include comparative government, public policy, inequality in the US, American political development and state building, illiberal social policy and comparative welfare policy and his scholarly contribution has been recognized in elections to such learned societies as the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society.
Speaking on his election, Desmond said:
“I am immensely grateful to the NAS for this great honour, which also attests to the wonderfully supportive environment of Oxford University especially colleagues in the department of politics and Nuffield College. Membership of NAS is a further opportunity to engage in high level social science research with colleagues in the US and elsewhere.”
